At one of my solo exhibitions, a man came running up to me, arms in the air, exclaiming, “I’ve seen the crucified Christ! I’ve seen the crucified Christ!” I wasn’t particularly alarmed—after all, I know Italians well, and I’m mostly Italian myself. But I was secretly delighted that someone had such a strong, personal reaction to my work. Curious, I asked him what he meant. He led me to Enchanted Wood and pointed out a figure within the branches—one that, if you chose to see it that way, did resemble a crucified Christ.
This painting has always held a special place in my heart, and it was deeply gratifying when Enchanted Wood received a Special Mention at the Premio Torretta Valadier in 2005. The jury praised its “quivering chromatic frequencies in a context of unity.”
Beyond this recognition, Enchanted Wood is, above all, a deeply personal piece. I remember wandering through the woods, immersed in the silence, feeling completely at one with every branch, stone, and patch of earth.
