This painting captures a cherished corner of my Roman garden, where the August sun and cool shadows reveal rich textures and forms. It complements Summer Patio, sharing the same intense summer sunlight, while Autumnal Hydrangea contrasts with its softer autumn glow.
Two terracotta vases rest on a green metal rack: the decorated one on the left cradles basil, a nod to Italian culinary traditions—though my mother’s tiny plants suggest otherwise. She had yet to realise that basil requires a larger pot! The lighter-coloured vase on the right holds chives, a tribute to her English heritage.
Rather than focusing on the herbs, I’ve zoomed in on the vases and rack, finding meaning in the overlooked details—the sun-baked surfaces, the rusty screw, and the play of light and shade.
